You never really get a feel for how vicious they are or that it’s a big deal that L’Arc managed to take one down all by himself. The opening scene with the Feldragons looks entirely unimpressive, as it fails to convey any sense of magnificence or danger surrounding the creatures, when they’re clearly supposed to make an impression, judging by the game’s dialogue.

Ryfia and L’Arc share a brief introduction, following which the two set off for the town of Topazion, where L’Arc can submit his battle report to his superiors, and Ryfia can figure out how to get to where she wants to go. This is Ryfia, a priestess from a far-off land who was separated from her people during a monster invasion. L’Arc is about to be caught in the explosion when a singing priestess appears and sends the Feldragon off peacefully through the power of her song. Somehow - don’t ask - he survives, and the body of his now inert foe lands not far from him.įeldragons have a built-in self-destruct mechanism called “Felburst.” It’s what you’d expect - when a Feldragon is killed, it explodes rather grandly, with a blast radius to be proud of. Once you finish the Feldragon off, more appear, and L’Arc is knocked off the vessel to the ground below. The game then seamlessly cuts to your first battle, which solely involves selecting the “Attack” command from the battle menu and watching L’Arc have at his opponent. This is L’Arc Bright Lagoon, your initially uninspiring protagonist. As the troopers brace themselves for battle, a lone young man steps forward to take on the first Feldragon in line all by himself. In Arc Rise’s world, these are named “Feldragons.” The Feldragons attack a flying vessel packed with soldiers. The story opens with a flock (?) of dragons soaring through the sky. Working strategically in this way will cause the game to be persevere and not grow stale.Arc Rise Fantasia gets off to a rather unimpressive start, which is a pity because a game’s opening hours are when it makes its first and most memorable impression. Working together, however, will result in more benefits than just sending one character in to do the dirty work. You can use all the points on one character rather than using all three (this would be used in the event in which a mage has lost all of his or her magic points, in which the character would be rendered useless), or you can use all three characters on the battlefield at once during the players' turn. Unlike Tales video games, Arc Rise Fantasia is turn based, though it has its fair share of innovations.ĭuring battle, each turn will give the player a certain amount of points that they can use up during that turn in whichever way they desire. Battles are not random, though rather you will engage in a battle by touching the enemy on the ground first, which will then trigger a battle scene. Like all traditional role-playing games, the player traverses the world battling monsters, conversing with other characters, finding treasures and developing a fantastic team by performing said actions. Though deep within is a game that's innovative and not at all like the game in which it looks. Many of the heavy hitters from Namco Bandai's Tales Studio were also involved with the game, thus explaining many of the immanent similarities between the two. The same team had worked previously on the Nintendo DS with Luminous Arc, a Marvelous game and Sands of Destruction and 7th Dragon, two Sega published JRPGs. The game was created by Marvelous Entertainment. One of the very few released for the console, it was intended to be an original take on the genre that would cater to those who wish to have a full-fledged RPG experience that would be offered on some of Nintendo's competitors' systems. Arc Rise Fantasia is a Wii exclusive role-playing game.
